Questions For You.

I’m working on a little side-project, and as a result wanted to pick the Sweetney Reader Braintrust: What are your favorite parent/kid-related sites? Anything from parenting advice to cool kid clothes/toys/stuff to online play for kids to message boards for parents — anything at all related to kids, babies and/or the parents who love them. Hep me to the cool, cats.

Also, as you may or may not have noticed, this site was down for something two and a half hours today. Needless to say, I’m a bit irked, so if any of you have web hosting recommendations I’d love to hear from you (I’m currently with Dreamhost, FYI).

I like Neopets, but my kids are both over six, which is about where Neopets’ games become fun and interesting. Also, they have age-appropriate account levels, so your child cannot hop on the message boards if they are under twelve or thirteen.

really, my fave messageboard is the “badparents” community on lj. And all the mommy and daddyblogs you already know about.
But I didn’t really post here to tell you that.. I was wondering if you read “Up with Grups” thing in NY mag? It made me cringe a bit… the way it’s written sucks, but it brings up lots of noteworthy social phenomena relating to the hipster parent of today.

I like to shop, but rarely buy due to the SAHM=no paycheck scam. But when I win the lottery, dude, I know just where to go.
PS – I thought the Grups story was interesting. Kind of painted with a broad brush per usual, but worth a read.

I would like to second the Oliebollen.com motion and also add Modernseed.com to the list. This is where you will find the lovely 8oo dollar stroller we all covet. Secretly.

Some sites that saved us when daddy had the flu and we had no DVDs or TV or anything were the TV ones–like pbs kids and up to ten (boowa and kwala).
Sorry, it’s not much but it’s all I’ve got.

Blogging Baby is my one-stop for parenting info. Cool Mom Picks is also good.
My website host is SuperNova. I’ve been with them since Oct. 2002 (piggyhawk.net). Toasted Cheese, a writing website I co-founded, has been hosted by SuperNova since January 2001 (toasted-cheese.com). The rates for a nice-size package are under $10/mo and you pay for a year at a time. Any problems I’ve had w/ my site, their helpdesk has come through quickly and completely.

My three year old loves starfall.com, it’s really better for teaching older children to read, but I don’t tell her that.

Um, not to be self-serving here, but I have a little site I call Mama Cooks. I post simple yet impressive chef-written recipes along with first-person essays. Check it out if you have the time!
