Life

Yesterday the twelve chicks that The Kid’s preschool class has been tending finally hatched. Can’t explain it, but somehow seeing them this morning made everything feel ever-so-slightly better.

Baby animals are the answer, my friends.

EDIT: If you’re able, please consider making a donation to the Amish School Recovery Fund here.

Adorable. I would love to have one as a pet – the kind that doesn’t grow into a chicken though.

OMG, screem. I miss having chickens like, whoa. Coolest dumb animals I ever owned, because they live outside.

My son’s preschool has a couple of moody hens flitting around the grassy knoll. Oh, the abuses those poor cluckers have put up with! Sticky fingered, booger encrusted three-year-olds poking them in their beedy eyes, stamping on their scaley claws and pelting plastic shovels at them. Actually, it’s not that bad. The teachers show them how to touch nicey, nice. Does your kid’s school get to keep the chicks until they are full grown and beyond? Keep us posted on fuzzy cuteness.

In 1978, our next door neighbor got to bring home one of the chicks as a pet. He tied a tiny piece of dental floss around its leg and took it out for a walk…whereupon our mutt jumped from the bushes and ate it in one bite. We were all traumatized for weeks. Please do not share this story with M_!

How awesome that they all hatched! We did that when I was in the 2nd grade and only 2 out of 20 hatched.
