Internet

Yes, its all video all the time, folks!

But really, once you watch this news clip from the early 90s, you’ll forgive me and understand:

Oddly, nothing about Trucks or Tubes.

[Thanks, Ryan!]

“There’s not a lot of cursing… there’s not pages full of ‘go to hell’…”
Ah, well. Because, you know, that online midnight contract bridge got vicious as it evolved.

I’m sorry, I was so distracted by the bad nineties hair and the references to “internet” instead of THE internet…
    wait, what was I saying?
    Bad hair! Internet!

I was struck by that line too Melanie, I had to laugh at that one, knowing what was to come. While they did mention that discussions ranged from recipes to sex to philosophy little did they know the impact on the porn industry. I’d love to see a followup piece that explores the similarities and differences from the early days.
(Best Stone Phillips announcer voice) “In the early days the internet was limited to typed conversations on ‘bulletin boards’ and it has grown into a multimedia Goliath chalk full of porn of every kind, just enter any word in to a ‘search engine’ and there will be at least one reference to sex, usually accompanied with full graphics and often with animation or even full video. Why my laptop here at NBC accumulated 100 gigabytes of such data in just a few weeks. Who ever thought that way back then that the internet would grow into such a useful tool for the enjoyment of horny men, young and old alike, and not just men. Mom has traded in her recipe card for a ‘web cam’ so she too can express her need for open sexuality. But what about junior? Don’t worry America the youth of today no longer have to hide in the dirty toxin filled garage looking for the latest copy of Playboy or Hustler left by dad, now they can be in the safe and clean environment of the family home. Yes the internet has come a long way since those early days, and where will it go, well the sky is the limit. Perhaps one day there will be people who will want to write about their lives and feelings in frequently updated web logs, but who would read these tributes to ones self when there is so much to see at $3.99 a month. For NBC this is Stone Philips”

    “THE INTERNET IS:
    LIBERTY
    FRIENDS ALL OVER THE WORLD
    FUN
    INFORMATION
    ANONYMITY
    PART OF OUR EVERY-DAY LIFE
    AND MUCH, MUCH MORE”
    bwahahaahahaaa!

This is so awesome. I love the serious announcer’s voice explaining that, if you tilt your head to the left, you’ll see a “little frowny face.”
Hey, my first INTERNET was Prodigy, too.
