Killing Us Softly 3

I saw this years ago, of course, but watching it again tonight as a mother I think my mind got kind of blown all over again. So important for any woman to see this, but perhaps especially mothers of young girls.

(Thanks, Karen!)

Wow. I have never seen this. Thank you. The part about silencing and passive young girls made me cry. I may never tell me toddler girl to quiet down ever again.

You're welcome! I have been quoting this all over the place since I first saw it. I mean we all know this, but she adds so much more and sums it up so well. I feel guilty sometimes because I am so glad I don't have daughters. I am terrified enough by the responsibility of raising two boys to be emotionally literate men.

Killing Us Softly is definitely due for a 4th volume, but this one is still pretty relevant and scary shit.

I submit that advertisers have made the same observation that I have about women: They take EVERYTHING as a personal critique.
Unlike me, however, they've found a way to capitalize on that.
To a man, an advertisement is either entertaining or informative. Failing that, it's a nuisance. To a woman, even a photograph of a pretty face has her thinking that she's inadequate in some way. No words are even necessary to cause this.
Tell me how a company is supposed to sell cosmetics or clothing without contributing to this. Should they feature pictures of overweight, unattractive people?
MANY of the observations in this video are at least "ambitious", if not a genuine stretch. Give me six months to hand pick ads and I'll put together a convincing 30 minute presentation refuting every point she made.
And it was news to me that "Everyone knows that elevators are a dangerous place for women." The mere fact that she worded it like that, "everyone knows…", tells me that she's as manipulative in her approach as any ad exec.
In MY world, it's women that retain all the power and control. It's just that some of you don't know it.
