Outside of my regular blogging gigs, I am a freelance writer for magazines. I conduct many of my interviews over the phone, but some of them are in person. I record all of my interviews and take notes so that I can create a piece that best conveys to my readers a sense of the … CONTINUE READING »

What better way to close out the year than by looking back at where I’ve been? To that end, here are my 12 favorite Sweetney posts of 2009, one for every month of the year.

Why Animal Collective’s new album “Merriweather Post Pavilion” is the next CD you should buy

[With the end of the year rapidly approaching, I thought I'd take the opportunity to look back at one of my favorite pop culture moments of 2009... please to enjoy.]
I first became aware of the band Animal Collective back in 2005, but only by chance. An out-of-state friend had made a mix CD for me that contained a single track, “We Tigers,” from what was then the band’s most recent album, Sung Tongs. It’s an infectious primal romp, anchored by booming tribal drums and layered with whispering, muttering vocals that unexpectedly explode into a hilariously exuberant, trilling chorus. And, as fate would have it, my three year old daughter immediately loved the tune, latched onto it, and claimed it as her Most Specialest Anthem EVAR (note: one of my daughter’s other favorite songs at the time was “Pale Horse” by John Vanderslice, which might give you a sense of her aesthetic. You may congratulate and/or pity me now).

Most home cooks and bakers swear by the KitchenAid stand mixer for its durability and overall level of awesome. But it can be pretty tedious to stop the mixing every so often to scrape … CONTINUE READING »

Well, now you do. There are several opportunities to buy the moose/elk mugs that Clark and Eddie sipped eggnog from in … CONTINUE READING »
