MamaPop’s Sparklecorn 2011: Unicorn Cake Evolution

This year’s Sparklecorn party cake by Charm City Cakes West was, well, SPECTACULAR (Sparkletacular? *jazz hands*). In the past MamaPop has rolled with relatively more realistic-type, horse-proportional-ish unicorns (YES, I KNOW UNICORNS AREN’T REAL. SHUT UP.), so this year we decided to change it up a bit and do something on the fantastical side. The MamaPop Roundtable Video intro by our own Palinode was the perfect inspiration, it turned out.

Became THIS:

Which then [drumroll] became THIS:

You can get a nice sense of the scale of the cake in this Sparklecorn party video by Ryan Marshall (which you should watch anyway, because it’s kind of breathtaking and it makes me cry and AH MAH GAH THE AWESOMEZ.):

Much respect and gratitude to the amazing CCC cake designers who worked to make this the most kickass and awe-inspiring centerpiece to Sparklecorndom we’ve had yet, and thanks to everyone who came out and danced and had fun and made this year’s party the best ever!

Wow, I saw photos earlier (didn’t make it to the party, sadly), but I had no idea it was so enormous! Well done!

Holy hannah!  How much tupperware does it take to package that thing up when it doesn’t all get eaten?  Beautiful cake!

You know what’s crazy?  Well…lots of things, actually.  But let me tell you what’s crazy, for me, in this regard…

I skipped my 20-year high school reunion, this year.  Got a lot of flack for it.  “How can you not go?!?”  “When will we all be together again?!?”   “YOU SHOULD COME!”  And so on.  But my heart just wasn’t in it.  As much fun as I had at the 10-year (to clarify:  I had more fun at the 10-year than I did in 4 years of high school (I hated high school)), I just really couldn’t give much of a rat’s ass about the 20-year.

But?  Watching this video?  Bittersweet.  Love that you all had so much well-deserved fun.  But had a little ache; a little “wish I was there” pain, watching said fun.  I read the thoughts and feelings so many of you share.  I know about the experiences and lives of so many.  Have shared lovely phone calls and/or emails….  So?  I have a little case of the sads right now, that so many incredible people were in the same places, at the same time.  (I totally should have crashed. ;~))

Keep doing the awesome things you do!  Viva Sparklecorn! <3

I wish more than anything I’d gotten to eat some. I still dream about the one last year. I also wish I’d made it more than 25 minutes before getting sick and leaving. The 25 minutes I was there were fantastic though. I know some of my roomies/friends were there till the end. They had a great time.

I’m pretty sure one of my very few photos from this weekend were of that cake.

    Can’t wait till next year.

That cake is freaking amazing! So next year, even if I don’t come to BlogHer, can I come to Sparklecorn?  Please?
