My personal style is having no idea what my personal style is, apparently (+Giveaway)

Let me start off by saying that I’ve never been a big jewelry person, despite having a fair amount of it. I have some lovely vintage pieces courtesy of my grandmother, and over the years have accumulated a few nice little baubles myself – a Tiffany ring that feels too precious for me to actually wear, for example – but in an everyday sort of way I typically wear only my diamond stud earrings and usually not much else. *shrug*

So it should come as no surprise that when I was offered the chance to create a style profile with JewelMint and get some free jewelry, I had no earthly idea what I was doing. In creating my profile I went through their process step-by-step and dutifully picked things therein I *thought* reflected my overall style — minimalist, classic, not flashy — only to discover that my taste in jewelry is in fact sort of, umm, radically diverges from my taste in clothing and other things. I DON’T KNOW WHY EITHER. SOME THINGS ARE JUST MYSTERIES FOR THE AGES AND A LADY HAS A RIGHT TO CHANGE HER MIND ANYWAY, OKAY? I AM TOO A LADY, SHUT UP.

As I looked over the jewelry items JewelMint picked for me based on my profile and made my final jewelry item selections, what became rapidly and abundantly clear to me is that where jewelry is concerned I like chunky, modern, industrial and “edgy” designs, NOT subdued, classic ones. When I finally looked at all the items I’d picked together, I was honestly kind of surprised by my own choices, weird as that sounds:

70s ring Snapseed 575x575 My personal style is having no idea what my personal style is, apparently (+Giveaway)

Seventies Flair ring - consumes my ring finger from knuckle to joint. Huge and abstract. LOVE.

chunky silver ring Snapseed 575x575 My personal style is having no idea what my personal style is, apparently (+Giveaway)

Metal Mosaic ring - I love the dimensional layers of this. Very postmodern chic.

necklace Snapseed My personal style is having no idea what my personal style is, apparently (+Giveaway)

Renegade necklace - Industrial sexy timez nao. When the boyfriend saw this he emitted a low growl of arousal... and that's all I'm going to say about that.

gem rings Snapseed 575x575 My personal style is having no idea what my personal style is, apparently (+Giveaway)

Lady Noir rings - modern simplicity, for when I'm feeling ladylike, dammit!

wood bracelet Snapseed 575x383 My personal style is having no idea what my personal style is, apparently (+Giveaway)

Carnaby bangle - I love the off-kilter shape of this. PS: Wood. Heh-heh.

open front ring Snapseed 575x575 My personal style is having no idea what my personal style is, apparently (+Giveaway)

Aqua Bomb ring - modern primitive, and the blue is a gorgeously delicate robin's egg blue.

Also surprising? HOW MUCH I LOVE THESE PIECES. I honestly couldn’t tell what the quality of the items were just by looking at them on the site, but I was hugely pleased when I got them and saw just how solid and well-made they are. This is real grown up jewelry for big people and stuff, ladies.

My mom offered to buy me a ring a couple years ago for my birthday. She wanted to buy my birthstone, which is a ruby. I don’t like rubies much, so I begged for a bright bahamas blue Peruvian Opal set in gold, made by a local jewelry artist. It is my favorite thing and I wear it almost every day.

  • lexalemmy

LOVE that metal mosaic ring and the renegade necklace…very indicative of my style.

For my 30th, my best friend got me this really funky necklace in Paris. She said she picked it out because “I thought it was neat but too scary for me to wear…but I know Lexa would!” High compliment, I thought.

  • Susan

Ooh, that first ring up top is awesome!! As is the second. I don’t buy near enough jewelry.

Another site for me to get hooked on…thanks! *shopping shopping shopping*

  • MDub2000

I’d kick a kitten for that seventies flair ring. It’s not something I’m proud of, but it’s something I’d do if I had to — just want to make sure that was clear.

    • http://www.sweetney.com Sweetney

      It’s kitten-kick worthy, believe me.

[Note to whom it may concern: no one is really kicking kittens here. Retract thy claws.]

Ugh. I did the personal profile, and now everything they’re showing me has big dumb hearts on it. Apparently my taste is ‘Suburban Mall Rat, circa 1987′.

Just keep asking it to “Show More” and select that most closely resemble what you like and click “Add Selected”. Then it will keep adding new items, based on what you selected, and you’ll get different stuff (hopefully stuff closer to what you really like!).

It’s cool — I realized I could use the sidebar navigation to find exactly what you got. Because really? That’s all I wanted.

That Metal Mosaic ring looks pretty cool!

I have a sapphire and diamond ring that I bought as a wedding ring. The marriage didn’t last but I still have the ring and I love it beyond reason.

Also? I love that last ring, the Aqua Bomb one. It’s not what I would think of as my style at all, but something about it speaks to me.

  • Snarky_Amber

    GIMME GIMME GIMME.
My favorite piece of jewelry WAS my MamaPop ID necklace, but I lost it during a move. *sniff* Now it’s this awesome mixed-media necklace The Boyfriend gave me last V-Day.

OMG, I love the Carnaby Bangle & Seventies Flair ring.

So, anyway, can I come over and borrow some things?

    • http://www.sweetney.com Sweetney

Totally. Swing by after you put the kids to bed. :)

  • SuzyQuzey

My fave piece of jewelry is an antique garnet and pearl ring I inherited from my mother. Also an enameled wolf’s head necklace from before WWII.

    JewelMint has some awesome stuff!

  • http://mygiggloki.wordpress.com/ Crissy

My favorite bit of jewelry is my engagement ring, art deco antique from the 1920′s. Husband bought it in secret, but I thought someone else had, was completely gutted. So much so that he had to ruin his intended surprise, to let me know that it was actually him that bought my dream ring. He’s good like that.

  • Megan Nelson

My favorite piece of jewelry is a small Tiffany necklace (probably one of their least expensive pieces!) that my husband brought home after we had a fight and he was gone for business. It’s special because he doesn’t get me jewelry very often but when he does, it’s always a timeless, classic piece that I get tons of compliments on. I wear it almost every day.

But I’m in LOVE with the Aqua Bomb Ring. That color is my new favorite for accessories, nail polish and accent items in my kitchen.

  • http://twitter.com/annaironside Anna Ironside

My favorite pair of earrings are dichroic glass globes. They’re a lovely shade of sea green.

Also, MRRRROW for the bolt necklace, for sure.

  • http://twitter.com/agirlandaboy Leah M.

These are so COOL. And so YOU. (See what I did there? You = cool?) I’m digging that Aqua Bomb ring. It matches the color of my imaginary unicorn’s hair.

  • Amanda (Mekalian) Wright

Oohh, this stuff is fun. I’m eyeballing the puzzle pieces ring, but also intrigued by the metal mosaic ring! Super-tough. Love it.

  • Kimberly R.

my favorite piece of jewelry is the lady noir ring.

  • sickerthnothers

The stuff under the pop up looks cool but since I can’t close the pop up from an iPad….

I tend to wear more delicate jewelry every day. I like the Sweetheart Set on JewelMint.

  • Kelly Sajonia

Doing the profile was so much fun! I like a lot of the jewelry and am looking forward to using the 50% discount code. If I won I would order the Aqua Bomb ring. It’s awesome!

  • Momma Sunshine

My favourite piece of jewelry that I own is a clunky junky piece of metal on a leather string that my daughters picked out and gave to me a couple of years ago for Christmas. Love.

  • linderooni

My favorite pieces are a pearl necklace from my husband and a circa-1900 locket that happens to have my initials. I wear one or the other nearly every day.

  • Kelly

Your picks are awesome, but I’d have to say I love the Lady Noir rings most of all. You, for Teh Drama.
The Puzzle Pieces ring could totally turn into my all-rounder, which I’m sadly lacking at the moment.

Thanks so much for turning this charm of magpies on to JewelMint!

  • http://twitter.com/souphead Suz

my new favorite pieces i already own are a bunch of necklaces i bought on etsy for christmas. a few with pictures of my baby girl and one old skool nameplate necklace with her name on it.

  • sumosez

My favorite is the Metal Mosaic ring. My wife would love it. I’m also a fan of the Aqua Bomb with its cool, simple design.

  • http://fathermuskrat.com/ muskrat

This shit is actually quite cool! I only wear a wedding ring, but my bride has some pretty cool things she wears from time to time. My favorite is probably a ring made from a vintage scrabble piece that I got her at an indie craft show thing.

  • Susan Dunning

LOVE that metal mosaic necklace! Heading over to shop now…

  • Jemmy

    Love the calypso earrings

  • GlamaRuth

Just ordered my first ring (Midas), so we’ll see how the quality fit are when it arrives – but I like their chunky, mod or industrial designs the best too. Contemplating that metal mosaic ring, so free would be nice – thanks for holding a giveaway!
