The couple that goes on weird meal plans together stays together

On Friday, out of nowhere, he said, “I’m thinking of doing that 4 Hour Body thing. Can you lend me the book?”

I looked at him, equal parts dubious and incredulous. This is not a man who needs to lose weight. “But WHY?” I asked.

“I’ve put on a few pounds this winter, ” he replied, tapping his completely non-existent anti-belly. “I want to give it a shot.”

“You realize there’s no bread on this diet, right? No bread, no pastries, no sugar. Nothing” I said, in ominous and foreboding tones. “And you’re, like, a baker. Did I mention no bread?”

“Just give me the goddamn book.”

“Fine.”

And this is how we came to be doing That 4 Hour Body Thing, aka the Slow Carb diet, together.

In which I valiantly half-ass yet another thing

At the ripe old age of 41, I’ve accepted, finally, that there are just some things I’m always going to suck at. I’m a decent writer, an okay Mom, a fairly good partner and friend – and in the Grand Scheme Of Things these are the biggies, so I’m grateful that I don’t completely blow at them, that I can manage some semblance of vague competency relative to those roles and their related tasks. But in other realms… well, as C would say in his down-home country-fried redneck sort of way, I’m kind of like a nun with a dildo (and yes, you can feel free to co-opt that charming turn of phrase and deploy with aplomb in every day life as if it was your own, and you’re welcome).

Stuff I Love: Squash Blossom Pâté and Vanilla Bean & Chamomile Blossom Maple Syrup

I’ve decided to start sharing more here. I want to share more of my life – more images, thoughts, and ideas – and more of the general “stuff,” physical and intangible alike, that I love. Some of this “stuff” will be items you can purchase, like the ones below, and some will not. I should add: I’m not using any affiliate links for these purchasable items, so I won’t benefit monetarily if you purchase them – that’s not the point. I just think it might be fun to throw some things I personally enjoy out here to y’all, things that in their own way I feel add something positive to my life, because who knows, maybe you’ll enjoy them and they’ll add something to your life, too. Here’s hoping!

Since giving up cheese, I’ve had to find something else to plop on the water table crackers with black pepper that I love, and this squash blossom spread from La Dispensia Dei Golosi fairly compensates. (Well, almost.)

Because if they don’t eat, you go to jail

I think we can all relate at least a little bit to this:

Which is part of the reason C and I decided to create Foodie Parent – but only part. Sure, your kids must eat, even if they generally resist things like, oh, nutrition and sustenance. And sure, we want to help parents who love food find fun and tasty – yes, tasty even to actual, real-live adults – ways to feed their kids.

But we also want to give parents a place to talk about the food they love, kids or no kids (hence the Breakfast Bloody Mary recipe prominently featured on the front page at the moment. Ahem-cough.). Because becoming a parent doesn’t – shouldn’t – mean you have to dumb down your taste buds to accomodate those of a 5 year old. (Plus, let’s be honest – parents NEED booze.)

I really hope you’ll enjoy the site, and that it’ll make mealtime (and cocktail hour!) easier and more interesting for everyone in your household!
