My girl who wears glasses
Oh OF COURSE they're pink. Was there ever any doubt that they would be pink? (She selected them -- I won't be held responsible.)
After picking these up yesterday afternoon, M spent the entire ride home excitedly exclaiming about how she COULD! SEE! THINGS!!!!
Look, Mommy! Look at that bird! I see that bird! And that stop sign! I can see that stop sign down there! And that tiny cloud! It's SO TINY!!!
You all know I'm not one to get all unnecessarily mushy and stuff, but lawd did my heart strings get a few good hard yanks. It's like the world's new in her eyes all over again. I can't help but feel a few twinges of guilt over all the things she's missed seeing (or seeing clearly, rather) until now.
Mommy Guilt: It's What's For Dinner.

Yes, I remember that same ride home from getting glasses when I was eight. OMG, there are leaves on the trees - not just a big mass of green! And branches! And blades of grass! It was amazing. Don't feel too bad. Realize that the emotion of the moment for her is fantastic, not bitter. :)

I'm so happy for her! (Meredith got a new glasses prescription about six months ago, and she is now able to see airplanes flying around. I get all teary when she points them out. Because I'm a sappy tool.)

holy crap, those are awesome. Do you think they make them big enough to fit my fat head?

gotta love Barbie glasses. Glad she's seeing all that is wonderful in the world in spring

I remember picking out my own glasses at that age! They were purple. So cute.
Also, I remember when my husband first got glasses a few years ago. We spent the drive home exclaiming how he could see everything in "high def!"

SO cute! I had a pair of bright pink ones growing up too. But mine were not quite as cool - the frames were those big round circle ones! Ha!

Prettiest. Glasses. Ever!
Do they make them in big girl sizes, because I want some for me.
Mom guilt = what I felt when they told me my son couldn't see ANYTHING out of his left eye. And it wasn't noticed until Kindergarten.

Those glasses are tres chic! She looks adorable in them. Awww.

Awwww! She is so cute! These glasses totally suit her!
I was very much like that when I got my first pair of glasses too. Only mine were ugly. They were round and gold. Horrible... and it didn't help that I was a little chubby. I should burn these photos at some point.

Woman! Am desperately trying to reach you. E-mail me! About book.

That never changes. My son got glasses last year for the first time at the age of 13, and did the same thing on the ride home. "ZOMG! I can READ the letters on that truck! OMG! Look how different the pavement looks!" etc etc ad nauseum.
The novelty wears off after a little while. ;)

She looks so cute. My daughter did the same thing when she got her glasses, everything was new. She looks like the little professor now. She has had a great year in school, third grade is a breeze when you can see.

Looking fantastic!

She is a rockstar, just like you.

Nice frames. I feel the same way when I get new glasses. I CAN SEE!!

They are very similar to mine. Mine are black and white and awesome.
Love the fact that your girl has fantastic taste. I foresee a fashion leader in her future.

Tres chic! Also way cute :)
I started wearing glasses in 5th grade, and like commenters above I just have to chime in that she's HAPPY, not resentful of you.
When I failed that eye test I was shocked...I'd had no idea my eyes were getting bad. Being able to see clearly is still a joy 17 years later!

You know, my husband and I (both of us wear glasses) have talked about that moment- from not seeing clearly to OMG! I can read the stop sign! and never thought about how our parents felt in that moment. Maybe I should apologize to my mom? Hell, right then, I was just too excited, not even bitter about them not noticing I couldn't see. Also, the frames? Are too cool.

I LOVE them. Man, glasses are so much cuter now than when I was that age. I had to wear humungous tortoiseshell wire-rims that dwarfed my tiny head.

My glasses when I was a kid were, in retrospect, hideous. They were tinted and huge and looked like Larry King should have been wearing them. The worst part is I actually selected them myself.
M's glasses, on the other hand, are wickedly cute and pretty hip for a little kid.

When I was a little girl, I used to stop and stare at the ground for long periods of time. My mother thought I really liked examining the bugs and plants I was looking at. Then I got glasses. Apparently I freaked out when I was able to actually SEE the bugs I was looking at. That is probably one of my moms favorite stories. (ps, the glasses I had were giant, that 70's plastic bubble squarish look)... hers are awesome! I love them.

Holy cow - kids glasses are so freakin' hip these days. She looks stylin' (and I'm so happy her world is so shiny and clear now).

Try not to beat yourself up about it. I've heard your story so often so it must be a pretty common thing among us moms. BTW - she looks so cute and stylin'!

That picture is so cute. Those actually kind of look like my glasses except mine are all black.

I wanted glasses so badly as a kid. I used to take the rubber nose and facial hair off the ubiquitous Groucho Marx prop, wearing the lensless frames with dippy pride. But then, I also tried to convince people an unwound paperclip was a pair of braces, and dried, trimmed Elmer's glue, fingernails.
I just got reading glasses very similar to your daughter's pair. Motherhood has ravaged every one of my organs.

I felt really guilty after we got DuckyBoy's glasses too, he did the same thing, "Oh, look...!" His, by the way, were selected because they were, he said, "Dinoco Blue," as in from the Cars movie. They were not in actuality Disney frames, but who was I to argue?? After that pair got twisted beyond repair (I know I'm nuts, wire frames for a 5-year-old), he picked out a color he dubbed Mater Brown for the next pair. Whatever gets him to put them on each day works for me!!

Those glasses? Very well could be the coolest looking glasses I've seen on a little girl. Ever. Seriously. Love 'em. I imagine if I'd had those in second grade I'd have gotten made fun of a lot less.
Posted by: Diana | April 18, 2008 at 10:23 PM
I had a similar experience when I got glasses-- Although there were nowhere near as cool. BTW - I wanted to use this open comment as a chance to thank you for the kind words about my trendy brother. I just love how he randomly got interviewed by the Post for his "look." I always just considered it Jon.

OMG, those are fabulous.

Okay, I never looked that good at that age with my glasses. They were absolutely NOT fashionable. Kudos: those are lovely.
